The WA Branch of the ACA is excited to announce our first technical evening of the year, featuring a guest lecture from conservationist Alexandra Moir, on latent fingermarks and their impact on the corrosion of metal artifacts in cultural heritage institutions.

Latent fingermarks are the impression of skin ridge detail left on a surface after it is touched. Skin secretions and surface contamination are potential causatives agent for corrosion on metal objects, which make up a large portion of tangible heritage collected by cultural institutions throughout history. Latent fingermark chemistry has been extensively studied for forensic purposes, however, in the context of the heritage sector, there is a significant knowledge gap in relation to the corrosive effects of latent fingermarks on metal artifacts.

Alexandra’s presentation will give an overview of the scope of this research and this should be a fascinating evening and a great chance to connect with the WA Corrosion community.

The SA Branch of The ACA invites you to join us for a Surface Engineering Workshop, hosted by the ARC Training Centre: Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM). Surface Engineering is a sub-discipline of material science with applications in industries like mining, oil & gas, steel, agriculture, automotive, etc. If a material degrades over time, it always starts from the surface as a result of interaction with the environment, causing wear and corrosion. Surface Engineering processes such as deposition welding, thermal spraying and thin-film technologies in combination with smart material choices can significantly extend the components service life. Thus saving resources, time and money. The workshop kicks off with a lab tour through the Future Industries Institute, followed by technical presentations from three experts in their field and concludes with a networking event, including drinks and nibbles, and the opportunity to visit the brand new Industry 4.0 lab.

Registration is at an external URL for this event.
