Description

The ACA VIC Branch’s YCG Committee is excited to follow up on the recent success of our YCG – Keeping Up with Industry Webinar, to bring us the second YCG webinar of the year – Careers in the Corrosion Industry. The YCG is a dedicated membership group for the Australasian Corrosion Association Inc. that aims to assist those new to the corrosion industry by providing networking, support and professional development opportunities. YCG activities are targeted at anyone who is new to the Corrosion Industry, and or under 35 years of age across all ACA industry segments (including Academic, Asset Owners, Consultants, Contractors, Suppliers, Students).

We will be joined by three exciting guest speakers each with a unique corrosion career and hear about their journeys so far and some of the interesting work they’ve undertaken, before opening up to the audience for some questions.

Research Fellow – Deakin University
Anthony Somers
After completing a Materials Engineering Degree at Monash University and a PhD at Deakin University. Anthony started working on projects concerning corrosion inhibiting compounds. Since then his group has been growing and projects have become more varied to include such topics as MIC inhibition and coated steel wire
As in many careers now, gone are the days of a position for life at University. To successfully pursue a career in academia it is important to be attracting research funding and this is best achieved by pursuing a number of research streams. It is also important to be working on a range of fundamental and applied research. In his talk, Anthony will cover how he has so far been able to develop a career in corrosion research at Deakin University.

Consultant  –  SMEC
Luke Thompson

Luke has 10 years experience as a Materials Engineer in various aspects of the Materials and Civil engineering and particularly in the durability field. He has been designing Cathodic protection systems since 2009, of a range of technologies including, Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) systems, Hybrid Anode CP (HACP) systems and galvanic CP systems for water pipelines, concrete and steel structures.

Luke has extensive experience undertaking condition assessments of existing infrastructure across various industries and has experience in durability management of assets including conducting chloride diffusion and carbonation modelling to help direct asset management strategies.

Luke will give us an overview of the consulting profession in the materials and durability field, from CP design to durability planning for major projects.

Contractor –  Marine & Civil Maintenance
Maxime Panafieu
Max has been working for MCM for more than 2 years now and he brings the experience of remedial work on concrete structures and installation of cathodic protection, galvanic and hybrid anode systems. He also has a high level of experience in the maintenance of various Access Systems.
