    4:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The SA Branch of The ACA invites you to join us for a Surface Engineering Workshop, hosted by the ARC Training Centre: Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM).

Event Schedule

4 to 5pm: Lab tour (limited numbers so please RSVP)
5 to 7pm: Surface engineering workshop presentations
7 to 9pm: Networking drinks & nibbles

Dr Thomas Schläfer (LaserBond Ltd)
Laser Cladding and Thermal Spraying for wear and corrosion protection of components in heavy industries.

A/Prof Colin Hall (University of South Australia)
Surface finishing of Additively Manufactured parts

Dr Paul Colegrove (AML3D)
Wire Additive Manufacturing (WAM) at AML3D

Surface Engineering is a sub-discipline of material science with applications in industries like mining, oil & gas, steel, agriculture, automotive, etc. If a material degrades over time, it always starts from the surface as a result of interaction with the environment, causing wear and corrosion. Surface Engineering processes such as deposition welding, thermal spraying and thin-film technologies in combination with smart material choices can significantly extend the components service life. Thus saving resources, time and money.

This free workshop features presentations from Dr Thomas Schläfer (LaserBond) specialist in laser cladding and thermal spraying as wear and corrosion processes used for protection in heavy industries.

A/Prof Colin Hall (Future Industries Institute) will talk about the different options for post-processing of additively manufactured parts and look at one case study aimed at fabricating freeform optics for space-based sensor applications.

Dr Paul Colegrove, Engineering Manager at AML3D, addresses challenges and opportunities in Wire Arc Welding (WAM) as an Additive Manufacturing process.

The workshop kicks off with a lab tour through the Future Industries Institute, followed by technical presentations from experts in their field and conclude with a networking event, including drinks and nibbles, and the opportunity to visit the brand new Industry 4.0 lab.

Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM) is a government-funded training centre (ARC ITTC) to train the next generation of engineers. This 5-year project aspires to be the model centre that integrates industry-university cooperation for applied training within an industrial setting, bringing commercial benefit to industries.
