On Thursday 29 June the SA Branch met at Crowne Plaza Adelaide for an EOFY Dinner featuring Adelaide’s best urban explorer Scott McCarten. Scott has been exploring and blogging about Adelaide’s abandoned, derelict and forgotten sites around South Australia. He presented some of his interesting insights into how communities change over time and the decline of South Australian industry.
Some of the photos he show-cased were stunning. They highlighted that the science of degradation (corrosion) can also be appreciated in its own right as artwork. It was a good mix of art, history and corrosion that suited both the technical and non-technical participants alike.
Some of the facilities that were featured were clearly shutdown because of extreme maintenance burdens for the owners. There are lessons here for designers, operators and maintainers to make wise infrastructure decisions with consideration to the life-cycle of facilities and the communities that rely on them.
