  • Latent Fingermarks and the Corrosion of Metal Artifacts in Cultural Heritage Institutions
    • Wednesday, April 21, 2021
      5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The WA Branch of the ACA is excited to announce our first technical evening of the year, featuring a guest lecture from conservationist Alexandra Moir, on latent fingermarks and their impact on the corrosion of metal artifacts in cultural heritage institutions. Latent fingermarks are the impression of skin ridge detail left on a surface after it is touched. Skin secretions and surface contamination are potential causatives agent for corrosion on metal objects, which make up a large portion of tangible heritage collected by cultural institutions throughout history. Latent fingermark chemistry has been extensively studied for forensic purposes, however, in the context of the heritage sector, there is a significant knowledge gap in relation to the corrosive effects of latent fingermarks on metal artifacts. Alexandra's presentation will give an overview of the scope of this research and this should be a fascinating evening and a great chance to connect with the WA Corrosion community.
