The University of Newcastle
Robert E Melchers is Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of Newcastle, Australia. He was an Australian Research Council DORA Research Fellow [2014-16] and twice an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow [2004-8 and 2009-13]. He holds a BE and M Eng Sc from Monash University and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and an Honorary Fellow of The Institution of Engineers Australia. Rob has received numerous research awards including: The ACA Corrosion Medal, The Jin S Chung Award (International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers), The John Connell Gold Medal (The Institution of Engineers, Aust.) and Eminent Speaker for the College of Structural Engineers, The Institution of Engineers, Aust. Rob was the ACA PF Thompson Memorial Lecturer in 2009 and has received the ACA’s Marshal Fordham Research Award multiple times, most recently in 2016.
Peter Johnsson is an Associate Principal of ACCOR Consultants with over 20 years’ specialist experience in the diagnosis and repair of building structures, facades and waterproofing. He joined Taywood Engineering Limited in 1997 as a Diagnostic Engineer inspecting and testing marine structures and high-rise buildings before moving to GHD’s Materials Technology Group in 2001. In 2004 he joined Arcadis’ (nee Hyder Consulting’s) Façade Engineering Group inspecting facades around Australia. He joined ACCOR in 2017 as one of the leaders of the Remedial Group.
Warren Green is a Director and a Principal Corrosion Engineer of Vinsi Partners, based in Sydney. He is a Fellow and CPEng with Engineers Australia and has over 30 years of experience in corrosion engineering and materials technology covering marine, infrastructure, civil, industrial and building structures. Warren is also a Visiting Adjunct Associate Professor within the Western Australia School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering (MECE) at Curtin University and a Conjoint Fellow of the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle.
Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads
Wayne Roberts completed a Bachelor of Engineering in 1991 followed by PhD at QUT in 1995. He then spent 7 years working for a consultant in the private industry doing load testing, structural health monitoring and asset management investigations on bridges and other heavy industrial structures. Wayne then commenced work with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads in the Structures Group in 2003. There he was responsible for all aspects of precast and in situ concrete, concrete specifications and design reviews on projects relating to durability, and constructibility. Project highlights with TMR have included: the 2nd Gateway Bridge, the Airport Link and the current Cross River Rail projects.
Maxim Kovtun graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering specialising in the production of building materials, products and structures and holds a PhD from the Belgorod State Technological University, Russia. After graduation, he was appointed as an assistant lecturer in the Department of Building Materials Science, Products and Structures. In 2018, Maxim moved to Australia and is currently employed as a senior materials engineer at SMEC Australia. Dr Kovtun has 15+ years of hands-on experience in engineering and R&D of cementitious and cement-based building materials. In his current role, Maxim is involved in durability assessment and design, including thermal modelling of mass reinforced concrete elements for major transport infrastructure projects in New South Wales and Victoria.
Daniel has a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from The University of Technology Sydney and has completed post-graduate studies in concrete technology and rehabilitation. Daniel has worked on a number of large infrastructure projects such as Airport Link Tunnel in Sydney, Taiwan High-Speed Rail and many major tunnel projects across Australia over the past 25 years. In 2003, Daniel started Bluey Technologies, a product supply company that specialise in polymer, cementitious and resin-based products for concrete protection and repair. The company has grown rapidly over its 17-year history and has since become a supplier to some of the largest construction companies throughout Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia.
Doug Hamlin has nine years experience in concrete durability and waterproofing with Markham, predominantly working with colloidal silica hydrogel systems. Doug understands the need for data from engineers and the risks involved for any engineer to recommend or sign off on durability systems but also understands the need to look at real-life applications. Doug is experienced with install right through to scientific and technical aspects of colloidal silica hydrogels, and he prides himself on continuous learning.
