The Queensland branch of the ACA held their 2019 AGM at the Beenleigh Rum Distillery after the tour on Monday 18 March 2019.
It was pleasing to see a good turnout and interest from younger ACA members.  The proceedings were opened with Nick Doblo bowing out as branch president after two years.

Office bearers elected were Murry McCormick as president, Isaac Isakovich as branch secretary, Matt Hollywood continuing on as treasurer, Jason Paterson as vice president and Paul Larkin as YCG coordinator.
Bob Phang and Wayne Burns were elected as Branch Councillors for 2019. As expected the branch committee expands with the addition of a number of members volunteering their time and effort to continue to improve branch activity and membership growth.

The branch committee meets every first Monday of the month at the Queensland Maritime Museum (www.maritimemuseum.com.au).  All members are welcome to attend.  The Queensland Branch Committee look forward to an exciting year of talks, tours and entertainment.  Keep a look out for events through your ACA email notices and the ACA events site

The ACA QLD Branch were hosted to a tour of one of Queensland’s best kept secrets, the Beenleigh Rum Distillery.  Founded over 130 years ago (before Coca Cola was invented), on the banks of the Albert River in South East Queensland, the distillery has changed ownership a few times, been flooded thrice, been expanded and now is a thriving export business amongst Bickford’s many brands.
The attendees were treated to a rum cocktail upon arrival.  The visit included a guided tour of the facility where water drawn from the distillery’s own dam is used to add to the molasses to make the mash.  From then a secret yeast is added to ferment the wort, after which the distilling process begins.  The original copper kettle distillation equipment is still in use.  Various flavours and hues are added to the liquor by storing in vats and barrels made from kauri and american oak.  Barrels are sourced from far and wide including the Jack Daniels distillery in the USA.  Various alcohols are made at the distillery including a white rum, vodka, gin and even sterilising alcohol.  The distillery has won international awards for their rum, their pride and joy being the 10 year old rum. With the tour over, the group enjoyed a sumptuous spread amongst friends and colleagues in the corrosion industry.
