The Queensland Branch of the ACA held its Annual General Meeting on the 15th March 2021 at the Easts Leagues Club. The formalities included the President, Murry McCormick being elected unopposed for another term, along with John Triebe as Treasurer, Wayne Thomson and Bob Phang as Councillors, John Triebe as Events coordinator, Javed Nadem as YCG coordinator, and Wayne Thomson as Membership officer. The role of Branch Secretary and Vice President is to still be determined after a few absentees expressed a desire to commit to the Branch Committee in 2021. The level of enthusiasm from members will ensure the packed 2021 program is going to be well managed and provide opportunities for members to engage in learning and fellowship opportunities.
Between sumptuous dinner servings, John Triebe gave the engaged group an informative talk on Coating Specifications under the title, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. John highlighted aspects of poor specification, poor surface preparation and application with detailed pictures. Several failures of refurbishments were given. Interestingly some specifications indicate a lower level of application, but not an upper level. Many specifications still use of the term “sandblasting” which needs to be replaced with “abrasive blasting.” The use of a well-prepared Inspection and Test Plan helps avoid many misconceptions on site. John also gave the audience examples of some well-written specifications which can potentially save the asset owner “buckets of money”.
The attendees enjoyed a relaxed chat and a few drinks afterwards courtesy of the sponsors of the evening, Corrotek and McCorr. Thank you to John Triebe of Corrotek for sponsoring the venue and Murry McCormick from McCorr for sponsoring the drinks. The event was well worth attending and signals the ACA Qld Branch Committee is raring to go in 2021.
