Participants will gain an understanding of the factors that are considered when selecting protective paint coatings for steel and be able to produce a specification that will ensure a quality job. Largely based on the recently updated AS/NZS 2312.1 Guide to the Protection of Iron and Steel against exterior Atmospheric Corrosion – Paint Coatings, the course provides theoretical and practical information on coatings selection for corrosion control. Inspection is only one part of ensuring a quality coating job, and selecting the correct coating system and writing a good specification are just as important.
Who Should Attend:
The course is designed for people involved in coating selection or specification which would include architects, engineers, corrosion engineers, project managers, coating applicators and technical representatives of coating suppliers.
On completion of this course, participants will be able to use AS/NZS 2312 Part 1 to:
- Determine the corrosivity of an atmospheric environment.
- Identify the design and fabrication features of steel structures which influence coating durability.
- Describe the methods and standards of steel surface preparation and the factors that influence selection of the method used.
- Recognise the different types of paint coatings, their properties and where they are used.
- Identify the factors which affect selection of a coating system.
- Explain the procedures and factors that differentiate maintenance painting from that for new structures.
- Choose the optimum paint coating system for structural steel from those described in AS/NZS 2312 Part 1 Table 6.3.
- Identify the requirements and duties of a coating inspector and define the factors to be considered when selecting an inspector.
- Calculate the most economic coating protection system.
- Distinguish between the key features of coating systems for non-atmospheric environments covered in AS/NZS 2312 Part 1 Appendix C.
- Explain the methods and means for ensuring that materials and contractors will provide a quality coating job.
- Evaluate typical coating systems used in specific industries.
- Describe the sections of a typical paint coating specification.
- Plan and prepare a paint coating specification.
This course covers technical aspects of selection and
specification of protective coatings, largely for atmospheric
environments. It does not specifically cover coatings for
pipelines, or other underground purposes, nor does it cover
decorative, anti-foulings, fire-resistance or other types of
coatings. However, much of the information would be relevant
for such applications. The course does not cover non-technical
aspects of specifications such as contractual, financial, health
and safety and environmental requirements, etc.
